There is duality in everything.
This batch of functional work is a nod to the abuelita that lives in me. She will be in my work a lot so you all will get to know her well!
I imagine people having these vases to put their propagations from their houseplants, or garden in to store inside during the winter. The pops of color a reminder of all the color to come in the Spring. Both my grandmothers enjoyed caring for plants, one of which made a whole landscaping business that I romped in as a kid.
These vases make me think of my late grandmother, Carmen, who liked to sit at her table and enjoy the paper with some pan dulce and coffee in the morning. If she was still around, I could see her giving me shade for this work 😂 (if you knew her, you know what I mean). But I can also see her admiring it on her table lovingly while doing this morning ritual while a flow of guests come through to chismando and she would get to show off what her granddaughter brought her.
On a skill level, I was experimenting with a lot! I’m continually practicing shaping clay on the wheel, collaring, and surface texture. Trying to throw bigger pieces. I’ve been testing new glazes and underglazes now that I have access to another kiln at my shared studio.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the storytelling behind what can seem like simple vases and cups. I hope your holiday makes you think of the good times with your loved ones and ancestors. If you’re hurting, I hope you can remember the brighter days ahead much like the seeds we’ll sow in Spring. Harness the softness within you and sit with however the season makes you feel. Much like my grandmother’s side of shade with love, there is a duality in everything. Light in the dark, dark in the light.
